In kindergarten/ first grade, we are reviewing letters/sounds/lipreading positions, building words, recognizing word families, and reading our high frequency words to help us become more fluent readers. We are reading K/1st grade stories and learning new things. We are writing different types of sentences to help us with predicting/visualizing/retelling our stories. We are learning new vocabulary everyday!
In second grade, we are learning even more spelling words this year (15/week) along with our vocabulary words from our stories, high frequency words and word families. We are extending our writing with descriptors and using different kinds of sentences. We are learning to answer HOT (higher order thinking) questions daily.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students are working hard learning new vocabulary by reading selections from various genres, completing plot diagrams, answering comprehension questions, and reflecting on what they have read by making connections and completing writing activities throughout the year to support the selections that they have read. Also, we are responsible for learning new spelling words weekly (20-25/week) and using those new words and our story vocabulary correctly in context.
