Tips for Taking Reading Tests
  • Preview the selection first looking at text features, making connections, predicting & deciding genre.
  • Read the questions locating key words.  Gather information from questions to help build your background knowledge (who or what selection is about)
  • Look for key words in the question: who, what, when, where, why, how, etc.
  • Read the selection.  THINK WHILE READING!!!  Make notes on test book.  Use strategies:  summarizing, questioning, connecting, etc.
  • Always look back (reread) in the passage to help locate answers.
  • Read everything in the text: introduction, headings, captions, items in parenthesis, maps, charts.
  • Read questions.  Eliminate wrong answers.  PROVE IT!!!!
